L’Escala

A little bit of history

L’Escala is located in the south of the bay of Roses. Initially, the town’s economy was based on fishing. The beach of L’Escala was used as a port and the life of all the inhabitants revolved around it.
More recently, a fishing and sports port was built in the Riells area. From the 1960s onwards, tourism began to arrive, as can be seen from the large number of holiday homes and hotels. The natural landscapes of the town, and the ruins of Empúries, are fully exploited.
The Bay of Roses, located on the Costa Brava in Mediterranean Catalonia, opens up between Cap de Creus and Massís del Montgrí. Since 2011, it has become part of the club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World, a distinction endorsed by UNESCO which currently only has about thirty bays and which recognizes the tourist, landscape and cultural values of this environment formed by the municipalities of l’Escala, Sant Pere Pescador, Castelló d’Empúries and Roses.
Explore the Old Town, where you will find its small streets and emblematic corners of the historic center, which invites you to learn more about this seafaring town.
Escape to Empúries, through its various beaches, through the pedestrian walkway that borders them, and visit its Greco-Roman Ruins until you reach Sant Martí with its pedestrian streets full of history.
Go to Riells beach surrounded by its pedestrian promenade, its Sunday market, its shops, bars and restaurants as well as activities and games for the little ones, not to mention the water activities it offers for the whole family.
Just after Riells, you will find the Nautical Club and the Port of l’Escala with its fishing boats and lateen sailing boats, and the MARAM, a fishing interpretation centre where various activities related to fishing and the sea are carried out.
Continue through the area of Las Planasses, a spectacular natural space with several pebble coves where you can make a dive and an interesting bottom for snorkeling and diving.
You can reach Punta Montgó, from where you can admire the magnificent views of the Bay of Roses, considered by UNESCO as one of the most beautiful bays in the world! And it ends with a swim in Cala Montgó, protected from the wind and surrounded by caves, small cliffs and the Montgrí natural park where you can walk along the established routes that border the sea and the cliffs that are worth visiting.

DISCOVER L'ESCALA, AN OLD FISHING VILLAGE AND NOW MAINLY DEDICATED TO TOURISM, WHICH HAS A GREAT DIVERSITY OF CORNERS, COVES AND BEACHES. ONE SINGLE VILLAGE WITH DIFFERENT AREAS TO GET LOST AND DISCONNECT.
